Aggregate Clay

Clay can often be very smooth in texture, think porcelain.  I enjoy clays that have some tooth, sand or bits of basalt.  I have even added fish tank quartz gravel to a clay.  Interesting.  River Dog is a clay made in Oregon containing nuggets of basalt which melt unpredictably during firing.  The basalt lends glassy, ebony contrasts to the rough, sandy surface of each vessel I make with it.  Glaze is used on the interior but I prefer to stain or paint the exterior and use little or no glaze.

Each piece is fired to over 2200°  F.
